Modern superhero stories are defined more by the amazing circumstances and the trials and tribulations that the heroes have to face: circumstances that are beyond the norm and with outcomes that affect a wide magnitude of people—sometimes the world in general. Even a secret identity isn’t as necessary as it was in decades past… Tony Stark (Iron Man) went public, because the secret identity didn’t make sense for him. There was a time when revealing a hero’s secret identity was considered a story element to avoid, but today it’s all open to debate if it serves the character in better ways.
