Fresh out of medical school, Dr. John Lerma had an experience.
It happened during surgery. One of Lerma's patients told him that he left his body and while he was floating above them, he noticed something.
"He said I saw a quarter on top of this monitor," Lerma said.
When he woke, he remembered the quarter so he asked Lerma if he could go back into the operating room and see if there really was a quarter there.
"Sure enough, just like he said, there was a light film of dust. There was a 1985 quarter exactly as he had seen it," Lerma said.
That experience sparked years of research into near-death experiences and pre-death experiences.
Lerma worked with terminally ill children, having them document experiences with the afterlife, weeks before they passed away.
Lerma's research will soon be the subject of a documentary called Quantum Wisdom, chronicling the patients he's worked with.
